Tank vs. Tankless Water Heaters: Which Is Right for You?
Ridgeline Team · · 1 min read
Replacing a water heater is a decision you make once a decade, so it's worth getting right. The two main options each have real trade-offs.
Tank water heaters
A traditional tank keeps 40–80 gallons hot and ready.
- Lower up-front cost and simpler installation
- Familiar and easy to service
- Runs out during heavy simultaneous use
- Typical lifespan of 8–12 years
Tankless water heaters
Tankless (or "on-demand") units heat water as it flows through.
- Endless hot water for back-to-back showers
- 20+ year lifespan and lower energy bills
- Frees up floor space
- Higher up-front cost and may need gas or electrical upgrades
How to decide
If your household regularly runs out of hot water, or you value long-term savings and space, tankless usually wins. If up-front budget is the priority and your demand is modest, a quality tank is a sound choice.
Either way, sizing matters more than the format. We measure your household's peak demand before recommending a unit — an undersized heater disappoints no matter the type.
